Frankston: A New Wave of Living

Frankston began as a small fishing village in the mid-1800s. There are several theories around the origin of its name, the most popular being that it was named after Frank Stone. Frank Stone’s Hotel was one of the earliest known buildings in the settlement.

The arrival of the Melbourne railway in 1882 put the beachside village within a 60-minute reach of the city. Grand hotels and guesthouses sprang up along the foreshore, and Frankston became Melbourne’s premier holiday destination.

Today, Frankston’s city centre is undergoing a revival, with a new wave of venues bringing energy to the strip. Roccella Lido, a southern Italian restaurant from the award-winning Roccella Group, is set to open atop the Frankston Yacht Club with sweeping bay views. Nearby, Commonfolk serves its famous coffee using exotic blends in a converted op shop where music plays on vinyl. Down the road, Hop Shop serves rotating taps of curated craft beer in a hybrid bar and bottle shop.

The investment runs deeper than dining. The $1.1 billion redevelopment of Frankston Hospital has opened as Peninsula University Hospital and is the largest health infrastructure investment Melbourne’s south-east has ever seen. Add a revitalised waterfront and station precinct, and the signal is clear: Frankston has momentum.

From here, the joys of the Peninsula unfold. Head south to Red Hill wine country for a cheese platter and a glass at Foxey’s Hangout, then wander on to find artisan stalls, galleries, berry farms and cellar doors including the Red Hill Market, a first-Saturday tradition since 1975.

Frankston offers what so few postcodes can – a place where the coast sets the pace and the city stays within reach.
