Successful Collaboration With Artist Matthew Johnson

Urban Melbourne - Published December 2014

Almost 50% sold within 3 weeks of launching, Pace Development Group's latest addition to the inner south promises to stand out from the crowd.

Designed to reflect its cosmopolitan neighbourhood, the eight-storey George Windsor project will be a work of contemporary art both inside and out.

Located at 1A Peel Street, Windsor, the 48 one, two and three bedroom apartments are designed to capture the natural light through large windows and with open plan living, and feature premium finishes and views to the city, Albert Park and the Dandenongs. Meanwhile the exterior of the architecturally compelling building will boast a striking curved panel, which will feature a tessellated work of urban art created by renowned Melbourne artist Matthew Johnson.

Johnson, whose work often features abstractions, describes the George Windsor facade, which he has called Frieze, as a "classical interpretation of iconic design associated with architecture".

"The design of the artwork is derived from a series of desiccated grids that visually refer to a mosaic pattern. It is my intention to create an interpretation of the micro image by enlarging to the macro. The process will involve reconsidering the materiality of the image construction on an architectural level," Johnson says, adding that his interpretation of Frieze is a continuation of practice where the private and intimate exists in the social and public domain.

"The artwork will enhance the site by reflecting a sensibility of intricacy within the framework of the intended site, and contemporise a long standing tradition of the decorated façade."

Pace Development Group partnered with real estate specialists, Beller Project Marketing, to launch the project.

Damon Krongold, Director of Beller Project Marketing, says:

“Our fifth collaboration with Pace Development Group, George Windsor is a unique project conveniently located at the cross roads of Windsor’s eclectic Chapel Street, St Kilda’s Fitzroy Street café hub and Albert Park’s tree canopied lake precinct. With such enticing amenity on hand coupled with minutes’ walk to Windsor station it’s no surprise the response to the project has been very pleasing with almost 50% of the building sold within three weeks of the launch. Buyers are attracted to the unique design, amenity, and unparalleled location, which is typical of Pace Development Groups’ projects.

Project construction begins in March 2015, and the George Windsor will make its artful impact on the Windsor streetscape in September 2016.
